Happy Independence Day to all Eritreans everywhere!

Today, May 24th, marks the 21st celebration since the East African nation of Eritrea gained its full independence from Ethiopia, after having previously been colonized by Italy in 1885 - who they gained independence from in 1941, and England - who they gained independence from in 1951. Before the Italian occupation of what is now modern-day Eritrea, the Ottoman Empire maintained control over much of this territory between 1557–1885.

Eritrean history is home to some of the oldest civilizations on the continent. Together with northern SomaliaDjibouti, and the Red Sea coast of Sudan, Eritrea is considered the most likely location of the land known to the ancient Egyptiansas Punt (or “Ta Netjeru,” meaning god’s land), whose first mention dates to the 25th century BC. The ancient Puntites were a nation of people that had close relations with Pharaonic Egypt during the times of Pharaoh Sahure and Queen Hatshepsut.

Around the 8th century BC, a kingdom known as D’mt was established in Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, with its capital at Yeha in northern Ethiopia. Its successor, the Kingdom of Aksum, emerged around the 1st century BC or 1st century AD and grew to be, according to the Persian philosopher Mani described Axum as one of the four greatest civilizations in the world, along withChinaPersia, and Rome.

I’ve been reblogging like crazy but I definitely wanted to make my own post to commemorate the 21st anniversary of when Eritreans regained their identity and independence. 21 years ago today the sun finally shined on our beautiful hager after 30 years of darkness. Gallant Eritrean freedom fighters liberated the capital around 10am Friday morning. I just want to give a BIG THANK YOU to those tegadalay that choose to risk their lives so I could have the chance to proudly stand tall and call myself an ERITREAN. For someone to make that type of sacrifice is numbing to me. To those beautiful soldiers who couldn’t make it to see May 24 1991, while it breaks my heart you were martyred, I want you to know your sacrifice did not go in vain. It is such a heavy thing to know that someone died for me to have my identity but I promise that I will always carry that gift with me and make you proud. To my beautiful uncles Berhane, Mesmer, Girmai, and Tedros: I was never able to meet you all but through the words of my mother, I feel like I’ve known you all of my life. From the funny childhood stories of how Girmai got drunk off of Suwa when he was 3 to the pranks Berhane use to pull, my mother made sure that I was able to get to know you thru her. I still hear her silent cries for you guys when she thinks I’m not listening. She misses you guys so much! You are always in my heart. Love you guys.
Finally I just want to reiterate how PROUD I am to be from these special people. I don’t want to sound cocky or anything but I really am blessed and lucky to be from this kubur hager. AWET N’HAFASH!
